Symphony Orthodontics, a 1,500 ft² clinic in Virginia, was designed to meet the growing demand for advanced orthodontic care while creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. The primary design intention was to balance clinical functionality with a serene, spa-like atmosphere, minimizing patient stress and enhancing comfort. Programming requirements included the careful integration of public spaces, private treatment rooms, staff circulation, and delivery access within a narrow, linear footprint. The layout prioritizes seamless movement while maintaining clear divisions between operational and patient areas. Privacy is achieved through gradient frosted glass partitions, offering visual connections without compromising confidentiality.
The design distinguishes itself through the use of organic lines, flowing spaces, and white surfaces that amplify natural light. Key elements include a custom-crafted curved reception desk, sculptural lighting fixtures, and frameless curved wood doors, reflecting the clinic’s personalized approach to care. Live trees, placed thoughtfully throughout, promote healing and reduce stress in accordance with Evidence-Based Design (EBD) principles, offering a contrast to typical clinical environments.
Budget constraints required creative decision-making, with gypsum board used for walls and ceilings to allow for more investment in distinctive features like curved glass and volumetric lighting. The phased approach to construction reserved custom millwork for a second phase, ensuring the project stayed on schedule and within budget. Sustainability was also a focus, with energy-efficient systems, low-VOC materials, and plants enhancing air quality and environmental performance.
Ultimately, the design achieves a sense of spaciousness despite spatial limitations, merging functionality and aesthetics to create a clean, flowing environment. The clinic sets a new standard for healthcare spaces by softening harsh corners, prioritizing serenity, and incorporating nature into the interior. Symphony Orthodontics delivers an elevated patient experience, supporting the clinic’s mission to restore smiles through both high-quality treatment and thoughtful design.
